The short answer is that our forum is currently free to us, in exchange for the ads.
These forums are a bit of an experiment for us. If the community finds them useful and grows, we will very likely upgrade to a paid version (still free to users though) that has no ads.
So far, ads seem to be family-friendly and not too spammy. Please click my name (Bookworm) in blue to send me a message if you have any trouble with ads, or if you see something that is not family-friendly. We have no control over the ads themselves, but I will be happy to forward your comments to ProBoards. I am certain that their intent is to maintain a good environment for all of their millions of users.
